Every wondered what they are? Every wondered why you and your friend both have a Modest Charizard with 255 EVs in Sp.Att and why his Sp.Att is still higher? Well this guide will explain what IVs are and what they do.
IVs stand for Individual Values. Every Pokemon has a set of IVs in every stat. These range from 0-31. 31 being max and the best while 0 must be stated as the worst. So, as said before with the 2 Charizards, you could have 24 as your IV while he could have 31. See when your breeding your Pokemon's IVs are calculated by a few things: 1) The parents IVs (If breeding) 2) Luck. Having good IVs is sort of a must have in battles because it could be the difference between winning and losing. See, having a Blissey with 12 HP, 23 Def and 10 Sp.Def IVs is bad. It means Physical and Special Attacks will be able to KO it. See, with that you would max out HP and Defence with your Blissey's EVs so you would only get your HP to 695 instead of 714. While if you bred better IVs you could get the 31 HP IVs. IVs are really needed to help win.
Now you have decided to have a Salamence on your team. You want him to be a Physical Sweeper. So you need to max out his Attack and Speed IVs and get an Adamant nature. So you have bred a Bagon with an Adamant nature. Their are many ways to determine what your Bagon's IVs will be. You could use an IV Calculator. While that is a way to see what IV you have depending on how high your stats are to how many EVs you have and your level. The other way is using Your Pokemon's Characteristics. On the 2nd page when you look at your Pokemon's moves and so one, llook at the 2nd page or where it says your Pokemon's nature. Look at that and it should say some text about what your Pokemon "is like". This means what it's IVs are, but only for one stat, it's highest IV. So if your Adamant Bagon has Mischievous, breed it again. That means it's highest IV is Sp.Att. So that's bad for our Physical Sweeper.
Here is a list of Characteristics that tells you what Characteristic means what IV is maxed.

Now that you now what IVs are and how to get them. But there are some moves the IVs can help weeken or streanthen.
Gyro Ball's base power is based on how faster your oppenent then you. So you would give it to a slow Pokemon. So your wondering what do IVs have to do with this? Well, if your opponent has max Speed IVs and you have 0 Speed IVs your Gyro Ball will do more damage. So IVs can help you if you have a move thats based on stats.
