EVs are something every trainer should want to know about. They are every special and hard to get but they could be the difference between winning and losing...
OK, you have just bred a Timid Abra for your team. You want it to be really fast and can OHKO with it's Special Attacks, so you would have to max out it's Speed and Sp.Att. Of course, with every good thing there is a price, you can only give a maximum of 510 EVs to a Pokemon and maximum of 255 to a single stat. So if you want to max out your Abra's stats, you have to give it 255 EVs to a stat. Now, you got to know how to EV train. Every time you battle and gain EXP. you get EV point(s). Now to determine what EV a Pokemon gives. You can look at a Pokemon's dominate stat. Take Zubat for example, if you have raised a Zubat it's dominant stat Speed. Since it's not a high base stat, it only gives out EV point. So, for your Abra, you can go defeat 255 of these to max out your Speed stat. Now that's gonna take forever right? Well thankfully there are ways to make this easier. Remember the Macho Brace? Well that doubles the EV points you get. So instead of getting 1 points, you get 2. Now remember the beneficial virus PokeRus? Well it also doubles the EVs you get. So if you give your Pokemon the Macho Brace and make it have PokeRus your Abra will have 4 points. That's much easier. So now instead of 255 Pokemon to beat you only need 64. But PokeRus is quite hard to get so just stick with the Macho Brace.
The Macho Brace isn't the only item that helps raise EV points. At the Battle Tower in D/P there are some "Power" items. They give you 4 more EVs to that stat. They're called: Power Anklet (Speed), Power Band(Sp.Def), Power Belt(Def), Power Bracer(Attack), Power Lens(Sp.Att) and Power Weight (HP). They cost 16 BP each. Now, instead of having Macho Brace, you can have them on instead. So if your holding the Power Anklet on your Abra you will get 5 points. But if you have PokeRus, you will get 6 (maybe 10 but not sure). Now this is much easier.
There is yet an other way to EV train. Remember all those Vitamins that cost only $9800 (1 BP at the Battle Tower though)? Well they add 10 EVs to the stat you give them. But this would make it too easy *death stare at Game Freak* so you can only give your Pokemon 10 Vitamins per stat. So with these you can get 100 EVs. So these+The Power Items, you can get your 510 EVs really quickly.
Yet again, an other catch. Not really a catch but an oblivus thing. No way a level 1 Abra could KO a level 15 Zubat. So, you could make it hold EXP. Share and let your Infernape KO it. EXP. Share gives you the same EVs to the Pokemon you battled with and holding it. You could though lead with the Abra+Power Anklet then switch to Infernape to KO it.
